If you have a large family or large circle of friends then it can often seem as though life is an endless round of birthdays, christenings and weddings – there’s always someone to buy a gift for! And in these times of economic recession, it can sometimes be stressful wondering how you will afford to buy yet another present.

A good tip, and something which we do a lot of in this household, is to make gifts at home. As well as being a good way to save money, it can often mean much more to someone if you’ve spent time making a present yourself as it shows effort and thought have gone into the gift. Not only that, it’s a great way to spend quality time with your kids, by getting them involved in making homemade gifts too.

A favourite of ours is to make cross stitch gifts. Cross stitch is easy to pick up and learn and you can make truly personalised items such as paperweights or cushion covers with a cross-stitched message such as ‘happy birthday’ with the birthday boy or girl’s name. Much more personal than if you were to pick up an ornament or cushion from a department store instead. These kinds of items also make lovely housewarming gifts, and it’s easy for the kids to get involved and help too.

Another great homemade gift idea is to make your own jewellery. You can buy all the bits you need from arts and crafts stalls and shops that specialise in selling jewellery-making supplies; there are plenty around. Once you’ve selected the bits you like, it’s easy to put together earrings, bracelets or necklaces for gifts that are truly unique and special.

You could choose to buy Hallmark greetings cards to accompany your gifts or you could choose to make your greetings cards as well. Cards are easy to make and you can be as imaginative and creative with them as you like. For kids, making cards is great fun. All that’s needed is some card, plenty of colours, glitter, glue and some time and imagination. And be prepared for a little bit of mess too.

Whoever you give a homemade card or gift to is sure to appreciate the fact that you’ve gone to the effort to make something personal, individual and unique. Much better than buying the same old toiletries or chocolates from the department store and much more fun as well!

Summer is well and truly over, some might say it never really arrived, and Britain’s rainy season is in full swing! No more picnics in the park or impromptu days out at the seaside for some time, so instead it’s all about finding fun stuff to do indoors.

If you are visiting a different city and it pours it down, make sure you have a few ideas up your sleeves for alternative entertainment. If you had planned to go and see some local beauty spots or landmarks, you might have to swap them for a trip to a gallery or museum. Pre-book tickets for famous landmarks if you go to London, such as Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey for example, as, although you can view these places for free from the outside, it will be much more pleasant to look around them in the dry and warmth if it’s raining cats and dogs. People seeking cars that are good for the environment while being easy to drive and refuel are increasingly choosing to buy hybrid cars. There’s nothing complicated in the driving of them and many now equal conventional cars in terms of performance.

And of course they’re better for the environment than conventional cars as they are powered by a combination of an electric motor and a small internal combustion engine. The engine consumes less fuel as the electric motor assists the engine through acceleration. Many hybrids now also can operate with electric only power around town at lower speeds, and the new plug-in hybrids can average about fifteen miles on all-electric power.
