It is important you relax, enjoy the ride and let your relationship ‘just happen’. But there are a few areas you can focus on in order to ensure the honeymoon period of the first few months sticks around a little longer, and perhaps even smoothly transitions into the ‘comfortable stage’.

1. Always try
It may be obvious, but the simple act of putting in some effort can show your special someone that they are just as special to you as they were at the start. Often we get a little too comfortable, we trade in the ‘dating undies’ for the holey ones, stop getting flowers ‘just because’, and date night evolves into take away and a DVD. Keep trying! Bring home roses just because you can, dress nicely when going out just to impress her, and evolve not into lazy nights, but into evenings you choose together.

2. Change
One of the biggest complaints you’ll hear in many disputing couple is that ‘you’re trying to change me’. And it happens. But when you think about, why force change? Firstly, if you force it, it isn’t accepted — and didn’t you love them just the way they are at the start? Secondly, why force it, when it happens naturally? Let change happen, don’t resist it, and don’t force it.

3. Learn
Spend your time taking in everything you hear and observe from about your special someone. Knowing them, being able to automatically know what they like and don’t, what frustrates and upsets them, what makes them happy or excited, will save you a lot of time, and help avoid issues. It’s also handy for birthdays when you’ll know exactly the type of gift they would like, without  second guessing yourself, and even to know how you should act if they have a bad day.

4. Say sorry and mean it.
Flowers and diamond rings are great, and can appease a tough situation, but if they aren’t accompanied by an apology that is genuine and heart-felt, they won’t go far. When you say sorry, mean it!

5. Get over it
If the relationship doesn’t work out, it will be a very difficult time for both of you. Some people get hung up on this time and find it difficult to move on. Take your time, grieve, but make sure you get over it in the end, and don’t take baggage from this relationship to the next.

When little friends come round for tea after school I am always happy to feed and entertain them, but life is so much easier when they are in the garden rather than the house. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly they can turn single beds into space ships, duvets into tents and generally ransack their bedrooms in a matter of moments.

If you are stuck inside with the mini whirlwinds, my advice is to plan an activity for them rather than giving them a free run at the entire house – they will only trash it! It is also a great time to share an activity with them, and sitting round the table together is always good for containing the mess. Don’t always be the host either: make sure you get your fair share of invites back to your children’s friend’s homes too – that way you have some hope of keeping the house tidy for one day at least!
