<p>Exercise shouldn’t be about work. Throwaway phrases like “no pain, no gain” are fundamentally flawed and do nothing to help our cause. The whole approach speaks of “work”; something you don’t want to do, but really feel that you “should” for the sake of what? Your health or vanity maybe?<span id="more-1641"></span></p>
<p>Either way, it’s completely wrong. Instead, what we should all be focusing on is finding physical activities that we truly enjoy. If you can find something you’d rather do than not on a quiet day when you could choose anything – then you’ve truly found the key to successfully exercising for life. This will be different for every woman.</p>
<p>For me, the “exercise” I choose (and I don’t really like to even use the word exercise as this is much more about <em>fun</em>) is climbing. I also love walking and skiing – mountains being the common theme here!</p>
<p>Given half a chance, I will don my climbing shoes and <a href="http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/climbing/winter-climbing/crampons">crampons</a><strong> </strong>and off I go. And the beauty of serious walking is that you can do it almost anywhere. Even urban environments have their charm.</p>
<p>And each February, I pack up my skis, <a href="http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/skiing/clothing/salopettes">salopettes</a><strong> </strong>and ski jacket and book in two weeks’ skiing, trying somewhere different each year. Anyone who has been skiing will know how firm your legs feel after a couple of days of this. It’s the same with climbing and walking.</p>
<p>But the health and beauty benefits are merely a sideshow. I’m doing it because I love it; and <em>that’s</em> the whole point.</p>

<p>The exercise myths vary from the ridiculous to the downright dangerous. Exercise is generally good for anyone, but unless tailored for individuals, it can also be risky, unproductive, and worse, act as a disincentive for people who really need to exercise.<br />

Gradual development <em>will</em> bring dividends in drastically improved fitness, circulation, and endurance.</li>
<li><strong>Competitive sport is the best for anyone trying to get fit:</strong> Competitive sport is great, if you&#8217;re fit enough to play. If you&#8217;re not, you can turn yourself into a wasteland of breathless strains and sprains. Contact sports are definitely <em>not</em> for people who are out of condition.</li>
<li><strong>Aerobics are great no-risk exercise for everyone:</strong> Most aerobics instructors wouldn&#8217;t agree. Some people can get tired just trying to persuade their way into workout clothes. Aerobics <em>must</em> be paced to individuals.</li>
<li><strong>Weight training adds muscle mass:</strong> Yes, and it also adds heart strain, and the risk of serious gut and back injury unless you&#8217;ve got good backup from a pro trainer. It is utterly absurd to assume working with very heavy, dangerous weights is just some sort of cosmetic exercise.</li>

<p>You get the idea about the myths. Now the realities. Rather than go through every possible form of good exercise, let&#8217;s concentrate on a proven exercise regime which works brilliantly, particularly for women.</p>
<p>Yoga is based very much on suppleness. This is the key to good muscle coordination, and all sports enthusiasts should try yoga if they want some relief from the hard work and pain of other types of exercise.</p>

<p>Do your stretches and warm-ups before doing this exercise.  Set the weights on the machine on a level that is enough to give you a workout without causing strain.  Place a wide bar attachment on the pulley and sit down on the machine.  Position the knee pad so it will rest comfortably on your thighs to hold you down during the workout.  Grip the handle with your palms facing forward and placed wider than shoulder’s breadth.  Let your arms be fully extended above your head.  You must feel the muscles of your lats stretch along with the muscles of your shoulders and lower back.  Keep this as your starting position.<br />

Exhale as you bring down the bar with the use of your lats and back muscles in a contracted state. Maintain the tension as you lower the bar until it lightly touches your neck.  Keep your upper arms stationary and do not use your body to pull down the handle.  Always concentrate the action on your arms and back and never bend at the waist.  Hold the contraction and the position for a second.  Inhale as you go back to starting position, still maintaining the contraction and countering the pull of the machine.</p>
<p>Repeat with the recommended number of reps and sets.  If you have rotator cuff issues, do the exercise by pulling the straight bar to your chest instead of your back.</p>
